Obituary for Nichole Christine Cropp

Nichole Christine Cropp (Nikki) entered the world on August 10, 1968 in New York, New York as the first child of the late John William Cropp and Alma Jean (Strickland) Cropp. After briefly living in New York, the family moved to Topeka, Kansas where Nikki would spend her early years. After graduating high school, Nikki moved to New Jersey to live with her beloved Aunt, Linda Strickland Goldsmith Fabre-Jeune.

Having a strong desire to be a contributing member of society, Nikki attended Essex County College and Newark Rutgers University. She would later obtain a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Literacy from CUNY’s City College of New York. After graduating from Rutgers, Nikki began working for the IRS as a Field Officer, a position she held for a number of years before switching careers. Nikki found her true calling as an educator, first as a Teaching Fellow working in the Bronx and subsequently teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to Chinese students in Queens. Fascinated by the sustained academic performance of the Asian community, Nikki decided to move to China and teach there.

Nikki became fully immersed in the Chinese culture and taught English at all levels while living in multiple Chinese provinces. She travelled extensively throughout China as well as other parts of the world. New York, though would always have a special place in her heart and she made sure to come back frequently to experience the many art infused hotspots that only New York could offer.

It was when she went back to China after visiting New York in October 2015 that Nikki became ill. Since she was unable to receive the necessary medical treatment in China, Nikki returned to the United States and was promptly diagnosed with cancer. Her fight with the disease was valiant and she was able to enjoy a few good times with her extended family and other cancer patients she met on her journey. She even visited Bozeman, Montana through one of the programs that grants requests to people suffering from cancer.

In August of 2016, Nichole moved in with her extended family in New Jersey where she was an instant hit with all of the residents but especially the two youngest children, Jordan and Kendall. Her stay in the home was mutually beneficial as Nikki was surrounded by love and support and the family learned to appreciate life as never before. Nikki’s energy was infectious and will stay with the Love, Sneed and Byers family forever. She was also embraced by the Hobson, Grant, Gonzalez and Clarke relatives. Nikki was lovingly cared for by her Medical Team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center which included Dr. Patrick Anderson and the incomparable Bonita Hickman. Ms. Hickman ensured that Nikki had everything she needed and even visited her when her care transferred from Newark Beth to RWJ Somerset.

Nichole transitioned on July 14, 2017 at Abingdon Care and Rehabilitation Center in Green Brook with her cousin Jeffrey and caregiver Adrienne by her side. She leaves an indelible imprint on the hearts of many and her quirky personality will be recalled with a multitude of smiles. Nikki leaves behind her mother, Alma Jean Strickland of Arizona, sisters, Allisande Camille Cropp of Arizona, Amy Esther Holford of Kansas and Chiani Louise Adams of Arizona, brother Jonathan Edward Adams of Kansas, her favorite aunt, Linda Goldsmith Fabre-Jeune (Raynold) of Dallas, Georgia, Uncle John Strickland (Sharon) of Florida and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
