Obituary for Wilfred H. Whitley

God saw the road was getting rough,
The hills were hard to climb,
He gently closed his loving eyes,
And whispered, “Peace be thine”.

Wilfred H. Whitley, better known as “Toby”, of North Plainfield, New Jersey, entered into eternal rest on July 18, 2017 at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerset, New Jersey. Toby was born to Harold and Lorraine Whitley of North Plainfield, New Jersey on February 13, 1953. He was the second of three children. He has an older brother (Alfred) and a younger sister (Lori). Toby was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey.

After graduating from Plainfield High School, he attended Livingston College where he became a member of the Livingston football team. Even though he loved the game of football, it wasn’t until he joined the Plainfield Police Department that he finally found his true calling. He spent 36 years as a Police Officer achieving the ranks of detective and sergeant and retiring with numerous citations, accolades, and awards for his outstanding service to the community. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association, the Plainfield Area Ebony Police Association, and the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement. He was a role model for other Police Officers and wore the uniform well. Toby also had a passion for the arts. As a young man, he loved to draw and paint even to the point of selling some of his work to a number of people who really liked what he was doing. Later in life, he took up photography. Toby was also an outstanding golfer. He could hit a golf ball a country mile and straight as an arrow. After retiring from the Police Department, he did not rest on his accomplishments. He continued to stay busy. Toby started a home improvement business with emphasis on bathroom and kitchen remodeling. He acquired and sold used cars. He traveled to numerous places on vacation and made sure to take time to enjoy his family, especially his granddaughter and the grandchildren of his loving fiancée (Vilma).

Toby is survived by his daughter, Latora Whitley of Franklin, New Jersey; his granddaughter, Madison Whitley of Franklin, New Jersey; his parents, Harold and Lorraine Whitley of North Plainfield, New Jersey; his loving fiancée, Vilma Velez of Valrico, Florida; his brother, Alfred Whitley (Deborah) of Clifton, Virginia; his sister, Lori Whitley of Dayton, New Jersey; his uncle, Roland Dugger (Lovice) of Little Rock, Arkansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
