Obituary for Dorothy Marlene Gary

Dorothy Marlene Gary was born on June 6, 1934, to the late Lucinda Giles Farrar and Elder Ernest Lee Farrar. Dorothy attended the public school system in Mecklenburg County and graduated from the Historic Thyne Institute High School located in Chase City, VA. She entered eternal rest Tues. Sept. 25, 2018 in Stratford, NJ.

Dorothy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia State College in 1957. Thereafter she received a Master in Special Education from Columbia University. In 1977 Dorothy received a Master of Arts in Student Personnel Services from Kean College of New Jersey. While attending Virginia State College, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Upon relocating to New Jersey Dorothy became an active member of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Dorothy married Eddie Gary who predeceased her, and from this union she was blessed with one son Bertram Giles Gary who preceded her in death. Bert, as she affectionately called him, was the joy of her life.

Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at a young age and maintained a consistent relationship with Him throughout her life. When Dorothy was a resident of Roselle, New Jersey she attended The First Presbyterian Church. When she returned to Chase City, after retirement, she was a life-long member of Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church.

During her career Dorothy taught Special Education at Roosevelt Junior High School in New Jersey for seven years. She was then employed as a Guidance Counselor in the Elizabeth Public School System and served at Battin High School and Elizabeth High School until her retirement in 2008.  As a Guidance Counselor, she assisted students and provided resources for continued education and encouraged them to get the most out of life. She was always there to lend a listening ear as she shared her love and talents with all students, especially those with special needs.

Dorothy was a well-dressed, soft spoken woman who epitomized style and class. She had a walk, unlike no other, that exhibited dignity, grace and purpose. Her friends described her as someone who loved helping people as she gave unselfishly. You could always hear her say “don’t worry about it”.  Dorothy was an advocate for social justice as she demonstrated this through her political affiliations. She also enjoyed cooking, shopping and Old School music.

Dorothy leaves cherished memories with her brother, Ernest Cartrell Farrar(Marie), of Virginia. Her adopted and devoted daughter Hilda Massenburg and family, Gerald, Aminah, Akirah(Mike) of New Jersey, Goddaughter Rev. Sakena Young-Scaggs of Arizona, devoted friend and confidant Katherine Carruthers of Texas and a host of loving relatives, friends and Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of Haddonfield, New Jersey.
