Obituary for Donald Clifton Cassett, Sr.

Donald Clifton Cassett, Sr. was born on October 12, 1929 in Plainfield, NJ to Walter Sr. and Elizabeth Cassett. On August 1, 1953 he married Ella Mae Kurtz where they started their life in Westfield, NJ. From this union, they were blessed with two children, Marsha Lenora and Donald (Donnie), Jr. Ella was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Westfield, NJ, and Donald subsequently joined and became a Trustee and sang on the Senior Choir as he had a beautiful voice. In 2003, they join St. John’s Baptist Church, Scotch Plains, NJ, where Donald sang on the Senior Choir and always attended the men’s fellowship events.

Donald was a hard worker and excellent provider for his family. He worked for the Westfield School system as a head custodian for Edison Intermediate school for 36 years. Many students looked up to him as a solid leader, role model, and mentor.

Donald was known for his good humor and sunny disposition.

Donald was very artistic and creative. He custom made a Dickerson Christmas Village display with hand painted scenes as he loved to draw and paint. He loved to watch westerns and his favorite one of all time and that he could watch all day long was “Shane”.

Donald also, and more importantly, loved to spend time with his family and friends.

On November 24, 2018, Donald passed away with family by his side at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Elizabeth Cassett; one sister, Dorothy; and three brothers; Bernard, Walter Jr., and Earl Sr.

Donald is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ella Mae; a daughter, Marsha Lenora; a son, Donald (Donnie) Jr. (Shawn), three grandsons, Christopher (Stephanie), Travis, and Jason; three great grandchildren, Cruz, Anayah, and Coby; and a whole host of nieces and nephews.

As a result of his generous spirit and pleasant personality, Donald was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
